Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Hello,

I wanted to share with you the final result of one of my very first crochet designs, a free baby blanket pattern! Long before I had learned to crochet anything, I had started crafting with a knitting loom and I was gifted a skein of Bernat Blanket yarn. I instantly loved the soft, squishy feel of it but never used it since I didn’t really like the end result of projects on the kitting looms. Eventually, I did end up learning crochet thanks to YouTube and so many great designers!

As all yarn hoarders do, I kept that skein buried in a bin and finally when I was pregnant with baby #3 I decided to use my crochet skills and make it into something for his nursery. Thankfully, by then they had bigger skeins and in much nicer colors available at Joann’s. I decided on a minty blue and grey combination, that would look nice with the white skein I already had on hand. Also, I wanted a minimalist style to his nursery and I opted to working up an easy blanket with chunky color blocks.

MATERIALS:
  • Q/15.75mm Crochet Hook
  • Bernat Baby Blanket Yarn (Super bulky #6) – 10.5 oz (220 yd)
    • 1 skein in Seafoam
    • 1 skein in White
  • Bernat Blanket Big Ball Yarn (Super bulky #6) — 10.5 oz (220 yd)
    • 1 Skein in Pale Grey
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
SKILL LEVEL:

This crochet pattern is easy to work up so it is perfect for Beginners. All patterns are written in standard U.S. terms.

ABBREVIATIONS:

CH – Chain

st – Stitch

Sl st – Slip stitch

FHDC – Foundation Half Double Crochet

HDC – Half Double Crochet

NOTES:

I wanted to use up as much of each skein as possible so the pattern is written with the row counts I was able to complete with each one. Thus, I was able to get 21 rows in Seafoam, 20 in White, and only 19 in Pale Grey. Yet, even with the differences of rows counts the color blocks still appear as if they are equal in size but you can alter this to your liking.

PATTERN:

Starting with color A (Seafoam), CH 2

Row 1: Begin in the second CH from hook and work 1 FHDC. Continue to work 69 more FHDC. (70 sts).

Row 2: CH 1, turn. Work 1 HDC in each FHDC across. (70 sts).

Row 3-21: Repeat Row 2. (70 sts). Change to color B (White).

Row 22: Ch 1, turn. work 1 HDC in each HDC across. (70 sts).

Rows 23-41: Repeat Row 20. (70 sts). Change to color C (Pale Grey).

Row 42: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 HDC in each HDC across. (70 sts).

Row 43-60: Repeat Row 42. (70 sts). Cut yarn and weave in ends.

FINISHED SIZE:
  • Width: 38″ (96.5cm)
  • Length: 56” (142.2cm)

I wanted to make a blanket that would cover the entire crib mattress so that it could “grow” with my son and eventually be used as a lap throw. However, this is a very simple project that can be personalized to your liking. Simply, add or remove foundation half double crochets in row 1 for length or rows for the width.

Looking back, I do feel saddened that I had not learned this skill before my two oldest kids had been born. I remember saving images on Pinterest as “inspiration” and falling in love with so many projects. I felt very intimidated by the craft but eventually I did pick up a crochet hook and haven’t let go. It is never too late to learn! Thankfully, though I do feel relieved that I have been able to make them several items over the past few years and will continue to do so.
